The visitors began brightly and were a goal up on 25 minutes when Togher were caught on the quick break and the Ilen striker slotted the ball past the advancing Collins in the Togher goal. The home side were on level terms just before the break when Zevenbergen fed Niall Hurley who made no mistake from 10 yards. Celtic then took the lead just after the restart when Johnny Collins finished off a fine move. Pat lucey got in on the scoring act 5 minutes later as Togher tightened their grip on the game.Ilen pulled a goal back but Zevenbergen wrapped up all 3 points when he finished well following good work by the impressive Liam o Brien. Celtic got off to the better start and Alex Zevenberger should have done better when presented with a 1 on 1 situation with the keeper. Togher took the lead just on the stroke of half time when a through ball from Stevie Hurley was well controlled by John Collins who squared it to his name sake and Collins Snr finished with ease. A different story was the second half and with Leeside now up for it Togher had the wind in their faces and the sun in their eyes. A Leeside spot kick was missed but the home side soon got back on level terms with a direct free kick. Celtic conceded numbers 2 and 3 in quick succession and by the 80th minute the game was over as a contest. Next Sunday Togher travel to Bantry to take on the locals in their rearranged Beamish cup game. Players are asked to meet in the Square at 1pm. The lotto jackpot currently stands at €1700.This will be on this Friday night in Nealums at 10 pm. 19-1-03 Togher Celtic's Beamish cup game away to Bantry Gunners was called off last Sunday morning due to a waterlogged pitch. This game has been rescheduled for Sunday the 2nd of February away again at 2.30pm. Lucky dips went to Nancy Farr-Park road,Breda o Donovan-Coach road and Donal Hurley-Drinagh. 8-12-02 An injury time goal by Mike Doolan denied Celtic a merited win last Sunday on a cold and damp afternoon in Drinagh. The 1st half passes away without major incident although Darragh Farr had to be at his best to hold a volley from Ronan o Sullivan. At the other end Togher created a few chances with Cathal Crowley and Paul Deane going close. After the restart Celtic upped the tempo of their game and with Deane's surging runs and Niall Hurley's dominance in the middle of the park, the tide was beginning to turn Togher's way. The deadlock was finally broken in the 73rd minute when a defence splitting pass from Donal o Sullivan was picked up by Johnny Collins, his pace took him clear of the defence and kept his cool to slot it passed the advancing keeper. Togher might have doubled their lead 10 minutes later but the keeper saved well from O Sullivan, with Farr having to push a goal bound header out for a corner from the following counter attack. Deep into injury time Drinagh equalised and still after this Celtic had the chance to score again but Deane's effort hit the outside of the upright and trailed away wide. Last weeks game was away to Ballydehob and in reality Celtic should have had this game wrapped up by half time. A combination of bad luck, good and bad 'keeping meant that Togher went in at the break 1 goal down to their more passionate opponents. The 2nd half went much the same way with mostly 1 way traffic with all the pressing coming from Celtic. Even a late penalty failed to even hit the target to leave Togher in a bit of a mid season crisis league wise. On a positive note Togher did have the outstanding player on the pitch in the form of John Hayden who's ariel ability and all round play made him a constant thorn in the opponents side. Next week sees Celtic travel to Drinagh for a 2.30 kick off, in the ¼ final of the league cup, leaving the Square at 1.40 pm The lotto of €1200 was not won. Numbers drawn were 11,14,17 Lucky dips went to Karen Browne-Castle Street, Norma o Callaghan-Inchigeela and Denis Cronin---Ballingeary 11-11-02 Celtic's away day blues continued last week when they went down 2.0 to Timoleague. The opponents took the lead after 45 seconds when Noel Collins deflected a cross into his own net. This seemed to jolt Togher into life and they came close to equalising on a number of occasions through Paul Deane, Cathal Crowley and Kevin Hurley. However a combination of fine goalkeeping and bad luck kept Celtic at bay. In the 2nd half Celtic pushed forward in search of a deserving goal that was not to come. With so many committed to attack the inevitable happened and Timoleague wrapped up the points with 10 minutes remaining when the unfortunate Collins once again got the final touch to get his 2nd O.G of the game. Next week sees Celtic travel to Ballydehob for a 2.30 kick off, leaving the Square at 1pm. The lotto of €1200 will be on this Friday night in Wrynns at 10.30pm. 21-9-02 Togher Celtic played Leeside from the AUL in the 2nd round of the FAI junior cup recently. Celtic began brightly and were 1.0 up after 20 minutes thanks to a Donal o Sullivan strike. The visitors responded emphatically and were a goal to the good on the hour mark. Paul Deane levelled for Celtic with 15 minutes to go to force extra time. Just when it looked like the game was heading for spot kicks, Leeside broke up field and scored the winner with 2 minutes remaining in extra time. Last Sunday it was back to league action which saw Togher throw away more home points managing to draw 1.1 with Kilmichael, with O Sullivan grabbing Celtic's goal in this game. Next Monday, the bank holiday, Togher entertain Ilen Celtic with a kick off timed at 2.30pm The lotto of €1000 was not won. Numbers drawn were 14,18 and30. Lucky dips went to Siobhan Murray-Togher Mike Donoghue---Skibbereen and Mike o Regan-Reenascreena. 29th September 2002 Togher Celtic played their first home game in a while on Sunday last when they entertained Timoleague in the league. This match was always going to be a tough encounter with the opposition always in contention for major honours at seasons end. The opening exchanges were equal enough but Celtic were just shading it at midfield where Niall Hurley was putting in another commanding display. The opening goal came slightly against the run of play when a Timoleague corner deflected off 2 Togher heads and flew past Darragh Farr in the Celtic goal. Within a minute the home side were level, when Donal o Sullivan finished to the net from close range. After the restart the visitors began to assert themselves more and it came as no surprise when they took the lead with 20 minutes to go. This goal signalled Celtic into a hasty response. Playing now with 3 up front they lay siege to the Timoleague goal and it seemed that all this possession would prove futile. With time up Cathal Crowley swung in a corner which was cleared out to his striking partner 'O Sullivan who rattled the roof of the net from 18 yards. This was no more than Togher deserved, who remain unbeaten at home this season. Togher Celtic-Darragh Farr, Brian Coughlan, Kevin Hurley, Noel Collins, Pat Lucey, Eric McSweeney, Johnny Collins, Niall Hurley, Stevie Hurley, Cathal Crowley, Donal o Sullivan. Subs-Phil Kelleher, Alex Zevenberger. Next week sees Togher play at home, taking on Leeside at 11am Togher have been drawn against Leeside from the AUL in the FAI junior cup. This match takes place in Droumleena Lawn on 13th October at 2.30pm 15th September 2002 Togher Celtic News Celtic travelled away to Kilmichael on a bright morning on Sunday last. Togher got off to a very shaky start but on a fast break Micheal o Regan slotted home for his 1st goal of the season. This lead was short-lived when a defensive error allowed the home side back on level terms. Straight from the restart o Regan found Stevie Hurley down the left wing and his angled shot looped over the advancing keeper. Kilmichael once again drew level just after the restart and it took sub Sean Holland to head Celtic back into the lead on 75 minutes. Kevin Hurley also rattled the crossbar but Celtic held on for 3 valuable points against a spirited Kilmichael side. Crossmahon had the upper hand in the opening phase of the game and Celtic were grateful that stand in keeper Sean Holland was on form ,denying 'Mahon on more than 1 occasion. Celtic took the lead just before half time when Pat Lucey finished to the net following good approach play from Michael O Regan and Donal O Sullivan. After the restart Crossmahon secured an equalizer and shortly afterwards took the lead. Togher then were awarded a spotter which was missed but 10 minutes later Celtic were awarded another penalty which was a bit dubious but Michael O Regan stepped up to fire home. Celtic had chances to secure all 3 points but both teams were happy enough to leave the field with a share of the spoils. Togher challenge fading after draw with Drinagh Drinagh 0, Togher Celtic 0
Rival captains seen with referee Anthony McDonnell, centre prior to the premier division league clash at Drinagh. Drinagh captain J.J. Hurley is at left and right is the Togher Celtic captain Kevin Hurley. There was little pre Christmas cheer in this top of the premier league table encounter at Drinagh. Going into this game the home side was leading the pack and fighting off the challenge of Togher in particular but at the end of the festive season it was Bunratty who were to emerge as the most likely to prevent Drinagh from winning this particular league title. However, at the start of this encounter, Togher Celtic were in a position where, if they won their games in hand, they would draw level with Drinagh. The point garnered in this game might yet prove invaluable in Drinagh’s bid to replace Timoleague as champions as they have four games remaining in their campaign and if they can take maximum rewards from all four they cannot fail. At times in this morning encounter, they played as champions elect should do but it was obvious that their firepower was severely diminished by the injury carried by Michael Doolan. The Drinagh front-runner was well off the pace as he struggled to shake off the effects of a knee injury. This didn’t prevent him from carrying out his defensive duties at times but when it came to outpacing the Togher defence Doolan struggled. When Darragh Connolly moved up to join him, Drinagh came more into a game where Micheál O’Regan was first to test Kevin McCarthy in the homesters goal. McCarthy advanced courageously to deny the Togher striker in the 13th minute and thereafter excelled between the posts behind his back four where Kenneth Burke emerged to give a five star performance. However their combined forces wasn’t enough on their own as they had to enlist the aid of Stephen Kearney and Michael Doolan to affect goal-line clearances in a period of second quarter Togher dominance. With Pat Lucey directing matters from midfield, the visitors applied the pressure until Daniel O’Regan moved out and Darragh Connolly switched to attack in a swop that enabled the home side to get more involved. Connolly drove just over and was then denied by a timely Kevin Hurley tackle as Drinagh finished the first half strongly. Stephen Kearney shot just wide in the last piece of action to a half in which the aerial battle between Gavin Daly and John Hayden proved fascinating. With Seán Holland reading the game as an experienced sweeper should and Kevin Hurley once again standing out as a class act in defence, Togher, restarted with efforts from Seán Holland and Johnny ‘Bonny’ Collins giving Drinagh cause for concern in the early stages of the closing half. The introduction of substitute, Paul Deane, should have given Togher even greater impetuous but the Drinagh defence coped admirably as Ronan O’Sullivan settled alongside the impeccable Burke. Aidan O’Brien also impressed as he swept forward from the left flank while Robert O’Regan toiled honestly in midfield. A rare defensive error from Togher allowed Darragh Connolly run onto a 72nd minute Kevin McCarthy clearance but the Drinagh attacker tried a lob that was plucked from its flight by Daniel McCarthy. The Togher ’keeper performed steadily all through a game in which a great Michael Doolan run almost set Connolly up entering the closing stages. Then Daniel O’Regan brought a good save from Daniel McCarthy before a Stephen Kearney corner was cleared off the line by Eric McSweeney. It was as near as the leaders were to come to collecting maximum rewards but the point taken stunted Togher’s challenge and left Drinagh’s destiny in their own hands. Drinagh: K McCarthy, J J Hurley, R O’Sullivan, K Burke, A O’Brien, G Daly, R O’Regan, D Connolly, S Kearney, D O’Regan, M Doolan. Togher Celtic entertained Riverside in the league on Sunday last. Celtic started the game like the 5.45 to Hueston Station and were 1 up within a minute with Donal o Sullivan firing low under the 'keeper's body. This signalled the start of a series of chances on the Riverside goal and they doubled their tally on 15 minutes when Paul Deane charged down an attempted clearance and the ball flew into the top corner of the net. Better was to come for Togher when Johnny Collins, who had been having a quiet game up to then, hit a screamer from all of 40 yards to billow the Riverside net again. Michael o Regan should have made it 4 just before the break but took one touch too many. Just on the stroke of half time Kevin Hurley made a last gasp tackle on the Riverside just as he was ready to shoot. Celtic missed more chances in the second half and Peter o Leary in between the sticks had to go full length to palm away a Riverside header.Togher made sure of the points when the 2 Collins; and Deane combined to deliver the perfect centre to O'Sullivan to dive full length to wrap up the 3 points. On a bright morning, Celtic kicked off into the sun and this was proving a difficult task with defensive errors to the fore in the first 20 minutes. In a rare Togher attack John Collins broke up field and was up-ended in the Leeside box for a spot kick which was duly despatched by Sean Holland. Togher began to get a grip of the midfield battle with Pat Lucey and Alan Murray to the fore. In the second half more chances fell to Togher but they failed to convert any of these. With 10 minutes remaining a hopeful ball from the Leeside keeper was allowed to hop in the Celtic area and the equaliser was got. At this point in the game Leeside looked like they might grab all 3 points, but just at the death a Collins corner was flicked on by Johnny Collins and finished with some conviction by Pat Lucey.
