Christmas Period
Dunmanway Town had some highs and some lows over the Christmas period. Town's tally was a 1-1 draw V Skibbereen A 2-1 win A.E.T. in the Quarter Finals of the 1st Division cup and a loss in the 3rd round of the Munster Junior Cup and a win last Sunday in the league.
These results weren't too bad but are now missing a lot of key players due to Injury and Holidays but last Sunday was the day for the new comers when Mickey Farr & Micheal "figs" O Donovan turned out for Town due to the Injuries and the Lads on holidays and they turned out to be the stars of the day when they both scored to win the match 2-1 V Bay Rovers. Town also had 2 Daniel O Donovan goals disallowed and a penalty missed by David Daly late on.
Town now lye in 2nd place in the League 2 points off the leaders but Town have 2 games in hand and are 2 points clear of 3rd and 3 clear of 4th so promotion is looking good for Town to go back up to the Premier Division after 1 good season down in the 1st Division. Town also are in 2 Semi Finals of the Carling League Cup V Drinagh and the 1st Division cup with their opposition yet unknown. They are also in the A.I.B. Shield after winning their 1st game and play Courtmacsherry in the Beamish Cup 1st round on Sunday 19th January @ 2.30 p.m.
Next Sunday Town play at home to Clonakilty @ 11 a.m. and all players are asked to turn up due to the injuries and the lads on holidays so we need everyone to come together at this vital stage.
Meeting Outside Match Sponsor Murchu's Bar @ 10.30 sharp.

Town climb into Promotion Hotspot.
Town played at home last Sunday Morning at 11 a.m. and picked up all 3 points and climbed another place into 2nd and into an automatic Promotion place. Town now are 2 points off top and have 2 games in hand.
Town started badly yet again by going behind when Sullane took the lead from a corner but Town came back and from another corner when Stephen Collins put the ball into the net yet again for his 17th of the season to make it 1-1. Town came in at half time with this score line and were determined to win but were made work for it but Town took the lead when Daniel O Donovan scored to make it 2-1 from a corner. Sullane came back into the game when they scored an equaliser to make it 2-2 when town failed to finish off the game. It took the final few minutes for Town to win when a goalmouth scramble saw the winner come about when Vincent Healy drove the ball goal bound which might have taken a deflection off a Sullane player on the way into the net but who care when it ended up in the net for Town to take the lead 3-2 and all 3 points and into 2nd place. Town had some excellent performers on the day especially the likes of Keeper Daniel Hickey who was very safe all day confident and Defenders Denis Healy, Sean Hayes, Barry O Donovan and Vincent Healy who is proving himself very valuable in his 1st full season with Town.
Town are not guaranteed promotion yet with 6 games left in the league and have a another big game next Sunday at home to Skibbereen who also are flying high in 3rd place, 2 points just behind Town. If town win next Sunday they are guaranteed top spot in the 1st Division and would have a game in hand and 5 points clear of Skibbereen or if they lost would slip down and out of the promotion places. A real important and big game.
Team: Daniel Hickey, Barry O Donovan, Vincent Healy, Denis Healy, Sean Hayes, David Daly, James Galvin, Colm Mc Sweeney (Captain), Timmy O Donovan, Daniel O Donovan, Stephen Collins. Sub Sean Lordan for David Daly.

Town continue good Form to climb a place.
Town travelled away to Gurrane last Sunday in the league and kept up their good form to claim the 3 points in a hard fought top of the table clash. Town were lucky in this game and came up against one of the best sides in this division this season. Town went behind after only 2 minutes when town midfielders were caught asleep when they left Gurrane walk straight at the defenders and Fergal Kelleher of Gurrane slotted a nice ball pat James Galvin who was helpless to stop it. Town battled on and came up against a very strong Gurrane defence and 5 minutes before half time it paid off when Town were awarded a penalty and up stepped Daniel O Donovan and saw his shot saved by the keeper who tipped it off the post but then Stephen Collins was 1st to the ball and hammered a great shot high into the net on the follow up. Town went in at half time 1-1 and came out in the 2nd half up for a battle. The 2nd half was a battle and town finding it hard to break down the Gurrane defence. The deadlock was broke midway through the 2nd half when town won a corner and Martin Collins got to the ball with a header into the net to make it 2-1 to Town. After this town could have finished the game on 3 different occasions when Timmy O Donovan, Daniel O Donovan & Stephen Collins went close. This was one of the hardest games this season and Town should count themselves lucky to win this and should be ready for another hard game in the League next Sunday when Town play at home to Sullane @ 11 a.m and players are asked to be outside Match Sponsor, Murchu's Bar @ 10.15a.m. Town now lye in 3rd place 1 point behind 2nd and 4 points behind 1st with 2 games in hand.

Luck on Town’s side
Town travelled away to Lyre on Sunday last and kept up their good form with a 6-0 win. With bad weather and a lot of luck town managed to easily win this one and they got an easy start when they got an own goal. This made the score 1-0 to Town and this is the way the game stayed until Half time.
In the second Half town now were playing with the wind and when Town won a corner early in the 2nd half Paddy Connolly took it and put in a nice ball to Colm Mc Sweeney who latched on to it nicely and scored to make it 2-0 then Stephen Collins started it going when he scored his 1st of the day to make it 3-0. Then Town were awarded a penalty and towns only player who hadn't scored this season Barry O Donovan stepped up to take it and scored it only to be ordered to re take it and this time he missed but was ordered to re take it again and this time he scored it again on the 3rd attempt a very funny moment. This made the score 4-0 to town and then Town prolific Goalscorer Stephen Collins decided to kill Lyre off completely when he scored another 2 goals and claim his hat trick to make it 6-0 at Full time, This was Stephen's 2nd Hat Trick against Lyre this season and also made him the Top Goalscorer in West Cork again with 15 goals now this season in 14 games.
Town now have a few important games before Christmas and need everyone to work harder to push for the 1st Division Title, Town now lie in 4th place but have 2 games in hand and could top the table if they win both games in hand. Next Sunday Town play away to Gurrane @ 2.30 p.m. and meet @12 p.m. in Murchus new Disco Bar for a Team photo for the Club Calendar which will be on sale before Christmas. All players are asked to be on time.

Town into Carling League Cup Semi Finals
Town travelled to Schull last Sunday to take on Bunratty in the Quarter Finals of the Carling League Cup and kept up their good form with Paddy Connolly, Stephen Collins & Vincent Healy playing brilliantly on a very wet pitch even though Town were without the service of some of their star performers this season.
Town went ahead after 18 minutes when Mark Ross played a great ball down the wing to Paddy Connolly who won a corner and took it himself and swung it in for Vincent Healy to register his 1st goal for Town when he met it with a low header into the net to make it 1-0. Town went in at half time with this lead and came out in the second half determined to win this one and claim victory over a team who are known as one of the best in West Cork.
Town continued to dominate and with the condition of the pitch now deteoriating badly a victory was going to be hard fought. Paddy Connolly in midfield was having a truly spectacular game with some great skill even the wet pitch wasn't stopping him and he was linking up with Stephen Collins very well. Timmy O Donovan was again strong in midfield pushing forward. Town introduced David Daly in the second half and David really got stuck in and put in a really good performance. With 5 minutes to go Town won another corner and Paddy Connolly again swung it in and again it met with the head of Vincent Healy who scored his second and confirm victory for Town and make it 2-0. With a few minutes to go the redundant Town keeper James Galvin got down to pull off a great save.
Team James Galvin,Vincent Healy, Barry O Donovan, Denis Healy, Sean Hayes, Paddy Connolly, Mark Ross, Colm Mc Sweeney, Timmy O Donovan, Stephen Collins, Daniel O Donovan, Subs David Daly for Mark Ross, Sean Lordan, for Timmy O Donovan, Daniel Hickey,Michael Toussifar.

Town travelled away to Bantry Gunners and put up one of their finest displays and came home with the 3 points and a 5-1 win to their credit. Town started well and after 16 minutes some great work from Sean Hayes who put a great pass on to Stephen Collins who in turn put in a great cross to Martin Collins who was waiting on the line to hammer the ball in to make it 1-0.Town pushed on but Bantry Gunners were awarded a Penalty after 28 minutes and they converted it to make it 1-1. Town didn’t sit back though and went ahead on 35 minutes and Daniel O Donovan registered to make it 2-1 and just 3 minutes after Town went ahead when Captain Colm Mc Sweeney headed a lovely ball over the keeper and into the net making it 3-1 at half time.
Town came out in the second half and Timmy O Donovan could have put town ahead 5 minutes into the 2nd half put his brother Dan seemed to head the ball and clear the ball when it looked like it was going in. On 62 minutes Barry O Donovan playing a blinder at left back cleared off the line when Bantry looked like they were coming back into it. Also in Defence Vincent Healy was playing a blinder and making sure Bantry were kept at bay. On 70 minutes town went 4-1 ahead when Bantry won a free kick and Town stood strong in the wall and Timmy O Donovan took the brunt of the strike and cleared the ball and went on a great run down the wing and passed to Stephen Collins who again set up Martin Collins who again was waiting on the line to register his 2nd of the game and 5th of the season. Late in the second half Town won a free kick when Paddy Connolly went on a great run but was brought down just outside the box and up stepped Stephen Collins who deserved a goal if not 2 to take the free kick and lifted it lovely over the Bantry wall to make it 5-1 and keep town climbing up the table.
Town are now in 4th place and have 2 games in hand and could go joint top if the win their 2 games in hand.

Sunday, 10 November 2002 |
This Sunday Town played at home @ 2.30 against Bay Rovers in better conditions than normally and this was Town’s 1st home game in weeks.
Town started the game well with Vice Captain Timmy O Donovan dominating in midfield and getting to every ball 1st and winning everything. Towns 1st goal came from good work from Stephen Collins who was unfortunate not to poke the ball in, but up followed Martin Collins who nearly drove Stephen Collins with the ball into to the back of the net to make it 1-0 to Town. It didn’t take Stephen Collins long after to register his goal to make it 2-0 to town still in the 1st half. Bay Rovers came back at Town and when they won a corner up stepped Alan O Connor from Bay Rovers to put a fine header into the Town net from a tight angle to make it 2-1 this was the score @ half time.
Town came out in the second half determined to make sure of the win only to come up against a more than determined Bay Rovers. James Galvin in the town goal kept town in the game by pulling off some super saves. It took a moment of class with some great passing and a great finish from Denis Healy to register his 1st goal for Town in nearly 3 and a half years to make it 3-1 to Town. And a few minutes later Stephen Collins put the final nail in the coffin to make it 4-1 to Town with a perfect finish to win the game and register his 2nd of the game and 11th of the season in 11 games and also to make him the highest scorer in the West Cork League. This win puts town up to 4 th place in the table with games in hand.

Town claim another scalp in Munster Junior Cup
Town travelled to Cork last Sunday to represent West Cork in the Munster Junior Cup against Munster Senior League team Leeds and came away claiming another scalp. Leeds already had come down to West Cork and played another local side Drinagh and came away with a close win in extra time. Town knew that they would be up against it after this team beating Drinagh who would be considered one of the best teams in West Cork but town got off to a unbelievable start when they won a corner and up stepped Paddy Connolly to take it and swung it right towards goal and straight in to the net to make it 1-0 to town. This wasn't the 1st time Paddy has done this either. Town continued to dominate with some great play at the backs and midfield especially from Captain Colm Mc Sweeney and Timmy O Donovan. With 5 minutes to go in the 1st half Leeds were awarded a penalty when Sean Hayes was judged to have fouled a Leeds player and up stepped 1 Galvin player against another Galvin player only for Town keeper James Galvin to pull off a brilliant full strength save to deny Leeds a equaliser.1-0 it stayed at half time. In the second half Leeds piled the pressure on Town but town were strong and fought for every ball again Colm Mc Sweeney excelling in midfield and being helped out by the clever Forward Stephen "Dapple Collins" who pulled back and helped out to bring the ball forward. With 20 minutes to go the long awaited introduction of Daniel O Donovan who came back after suspension and his fresh legs helped out again in midfield. 15 minutes to go and the nerves just about holding out Town confirmed victory when from a throw in from Barry O Donovan on to Timmy o Donovan who passed on to Stephen Collins who the squared it on to David Mawe who finished from close range to make it 2-0 to Town. This is the way the game ended and a famous victory for Town.
Team James Galvin, Barry O Donovan, Sean Hayes, Denis Healy, Vincent Healy, Paddy Connolly, Colm Mc Sweeney (Captain), Timmy O Donovan, Martin Collins, Stephen Collins, David Mawe. Subs Daniel O Donovan for Martin Collins & Daniel Hickey for David Mawe.

This Sunday town travelled to Skibbereen missing some of their stars due to suspension & holidays but still came home with a share of the points. Town seem to be sharing a lot of points this year but still only defeated once this year it still looks like being a good year. Town had to come from behind twice with some good goals from David Mawe who registered his 1st goal for town in only his 2nd start for town. Martin Collins & James Galvin worked well to set David up for his 1st goal. In the second half town again came from behind when Paddy Connolly firing into the back of the net when he was just put up front to join the forwards when David Daly came on to help out in midfield, this paying off brilliantly. Town chased the winner but Skibbereen held Town out for a share of the points.

Sunday, 20 October 2002 |
On a very wet & windy day Town travelled away to Sullane and could have come away with a win only to come up against a very good Sullane side that are justifiably league leader. Town took the lead through a very inspired Stephen “Dapple” Collins after 20 minutes and was very good all day despite the weather. Dapple came fro the left wing and made it 1-0 from a very close angle and was not finished here because he turned from goalscorer to creator of the second goal when he crossed the ball into James Galvin who finished it to make it 2-0 just before half time.
In the 2nd half with town now playing against the wind and the weather turning for the worse town were put under pressure and 15 minutes into the 2nd half Murt O Sullivan from Sullivan scored to make it 2-1 to put Sullane back into the game. Town tried very hard to score with some great shots from Timmy O Donovan and Captain Colm Mc Sweeney only to be denied by some great saves by the Sullane keeper. But Sullane left it late when Murt O Sullivan again popped up with only minutes to go to score to make it 2-2 and take a point out of the game for Sullane.
Team Daniel Hickey, Barry O Donovan, Sean Hayes Denis Healy, Vincent Healy, Mark Ross, Timmy O Donovan, Captain Colm Mc Sweeney, Martin Collins, Stephen Collins, James Galvin. Subs David Daly for Mark Ross and Michael Tuccifer.
