Bantry Gunners FC. Bantry Gunners V Clonakilty Bantry were at home last Sunday against Clonakilty for their second last league game of the season. Despite making hard work of it in the first half with Clon playing some good football and going 2 goals ahead in the opening 20 minutes, Bantry fought hard to gain the upper hand and come away with the three points. Clon opened the scoring 10 minutes from the off with a header from a corner and went 2 ahead seven minutes later. Almost immediately afterwards the Gunners replied when Daniel Lynch headed in Mark Connolly's free kick to bring the score to 1-2 going into the second half. Bantry came out fighting after the break knowing that only a win would do to keep them in the running for promotion to the Premier division. In the 55th min Ger O'Shea played off Daniel Lynch's back flick to get his first of the day to bring the sides level. 3 mins later Dermot O'Connell placed a lovely pass at the feet of Daniel Lynch who made no mistake in putting the ball in the net to give the Gunners the lead. With 25 minutes left on the clock Ger O'Shea looked to have finished off the game with an unstoppable shot from 25 yds to put Bantry two goals ahead but Clon managed to upset things by pulling a goal back to ensure that for the final ten minutes of the game not one of the Bantry players could afford to relax. Fortunately the score remained at 4-3 to the Gunners to keep them in with a chance of going up a division next season. It was a very important game for both sides as the 3 points would keep either team in touch with the leaders. Bantry got into their stride immediately and within minutes had the Skibb goal under pressure. Despite some very close shots on goal by Finbarr Harrington, Dec Barron and Pa Curran it wasn’t until 2 minutes before the half that Bantry opened the scoring. After a great run from inside the Bantry half by Pa Curran, who laid on the ball for Finbarr Harrington to chip it goal ward and over the keeper to put Bantry a goal ahead just before the half. 8 minutes after the restart the Gunners went 2 ahead when Declan Barron crossed into the box to Daniel Lynch, who shot the ball perfectly into the bottom corner of the net.The 3rd and final goal of the day came just 5 minutes later with Daniel lynch flicking the ball into Finbarr Harrington who got his second with a beautifully placed shot into the top corner. Despite the blustery conditions both teams played some good football in the first half but failed to capitalise on any chances that came their way. The wind died down in the beginning of the second half and Bantry got into their stride and began to put more pressure on the Skibb defence. Everything looked to be in Bantry's favour until the 65th minute when a Skibbereen striker was brought down in the penalty area. Despite a valiant effort by keeper Michael Cronin Skibbereen went 1-0 up. >From then on the majority of the play was in the direction of the Skibb goal with the Gunners playing their hearts out for the final 20 minutes. Unfortunately all attempts on goal were either saved or just wide of the mark up until the final play of the match when following a goalmouth scramble Daniel Lynch got a foot to the ball to earn the Gunners a well deserved draw.
