Carling League Cup
Semi Final

Bantry Gunners  2    Skibbereen A  1

Sunday, 27 February 2005

The Gunners faced Skibbereen A in
Ballycomane Park last Sunday for the semi-final of the Carling League Cup.

Both teams got stuck in from the start as the game had to be decided on the day. It took all of 30 minutes before the ball struck the back of the net for the opening goal. This came in the form of a wonderfully struck free kick from Finbarr Harrington from all of 35 yards out which rounded the wall and left the keeper wrong footed to see Bantry go 1-0 ahead. Skibbereen pulled the sides level 10 minutes into to the second half. Jimmy Griffin nearly put the Gunners ahead in the 70th minute but his shot went just wide of the mark. Finbarr Harrington forced the Skibb keeper into making a brilliant save 10 minutes from the end but despite the chances the score remained at 1-1 until the end of the 90 minutes and the game went into extra time. Just before the half time whistle of extra time Daniel Lynch secured Bantry?s place in the final when he met Mark Connolly?s free with a lovely looping header which stayed well out of reach of the keeper until it was in the back of the net.

The Gunners now face Bunratty in the final of the league cup which is to be played on St Patrick?s Day.

Bantry Gunners F.C. 1-1 Drinagh Sunday, 07 November 2004

After going without a game for the previous four weeks, the Gunners had a tough task to face into on Sunday last when they met league leaders Drinagh Rangers in Ballycomane Park. The Gunners were rearing to go from the off and came close to opening the scoring on a couple of occasions in the first ten minutes. The first real opportunity came on twenty minutes when Finbarr Harrington broke free down the left only to see his shot just wide of the post. Shortly afterwards Daniel Lynch was unlucky not to put one in the back of the net from the corner of the box. Going into the final five minutes of the half the gunners came close again with a strike from Finbarr Harrington being blocked and the rebound being driven just over the bar. In the final minute of the first half Drinagh opened the scoring with a shot from Eamon Connolly that came off the upright and into the net to see the score at 1-0 at the resumption. Twenty minutes into the second half the Gunners got their opener when Ger O Shea combined well with Daniel Lynch to see Lynch head the ball past the Drinagh keeper to put the scoreline at 1-1. Ten minutes later Drinagh were lucky not to go one down when Donal O Shea’s header was just knocked off the line by a Drinagh defender. Despite fierce pressure from both sides the game remained deadlocked for the final ten minutes to see a final score of 1-1.

Next Sunday Bantry are at home to neighbours Ballydehob at 2.30pm.

Team – M. Cronin , P Curran , S O Neill , DJ Murray , D O Driscoll , F Harrington , M Lynch , D O Shea , G O Shea , D Lynch , A Whittaker , D Murray.

Skibbereen A 2 Bantry Gunners 0 Sunday, 10 October 2004

Bantry travelled to Skibbereen on Sunday last for a league game against Skibb A. On a very blustery day Bantry were playing against the wind for the first half. Despite this the Gunners played very well for the first 45 minutes and were unlucky not to get on the score sheet on a couple of occasions. The teams went into the second half with the score line at 0-0 but Skibbereen got the opening score on 55 minutes when a rare defensive error left a Skibb player through to put them up 1-0. Less than 5 minutes later Pa Curran came close to equalising when after a great run up the wing his shot clipped the crossbar to go out wide. With 15 minutes to go Skibbereen were awarded a penalty which was saved brilliantly by keeper Michael Cronin who pushed the ball wide with a full stretch dive to deny Skibbereen their second goal. Unfortunately for the Gunners, Skibb got their second with 8 minutes to go and despite some great play from Bantry in the closing minutes they held out to win 2-0.
