19/01/03Timoleague V Bunratty (Beamish cup 1st Round)Without doubt this was the tie of the first round of the Beamish Cup, two teams who have 5 Premier League titles between them in the last 5 seasons battled it out for a place in the next round of West Cork's most prestigious cup competition. Bunratty playing with the light wind got off to the better start and had the best of the exchanges in the first 10 minutes and had the Timoleague defence under pressure playing the ball through the channels trying to crave an opening. Good defending by Alan and Denis O' Leary kept the attack at bay who were getting a plentiful supply from Mark Cotter through the middle. The best chance of the half fell to Colm Cleary who saw his effort put over by Timoleague Captain and Goalkeeper Noel Coomey. At the other end Ger Collins was unlucky not to finish a good run from the left as was Mikey Walsh who was stretching to get a good connection on a ball that broke from a cross from the right. Timoleague suffered a blow after 20 minutes losing Maurice Moore due to injury and introduced Alan Long in order to fill the gap. The half finished out with chances for both sides but Bunratty will have felt they deserved the lead going in at the break.Timoleague came out the second half and played as Bunratty did in the first. Ger Collins again going on two runs from midfield will be disappointed he did not make the Bunratty keeper work after doing the hard work. Timoleague began to dominate the play and were starting to win the tackles in midfield thanks to Kevin Kelly and Ollie Crowley and after 10 minutes into the second half thanks to pressure from midfield they were one up. Bunratty losing possession in the Timoleague half and a long ball from Eddie Lyons over the Bunratty defence let Mikey Walsh in. He had it all to do from here as the Bunratty keeper advanced but the experienced Walsh went wide and finished from the narrowest of angles to give Timoleague the edge. Five minutes later Timoleague were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty after a handball in the Bunratty box but this was forgotten when Alan O' Leary headed home a Collins corner 10 minutes later. Bunratty knowing they were up against it upped the tempo for the last 20 minutes and were unlucky to see a Brian O' Sullivan strike go over by the smallest of margins. This was always going to be a hard game to call but one would have to feel home advantage gave Timoleague the edge between the top two in West Cork.Man of the Match: Alan LongTimoleague: Noel Coomey, Eddie Lyons, Denis O' Leary, Alan O' Leary, Jonathan Hunt, Ger Collins, Maurice Moore, Ollie Crowley, Kevin Kelly, Brian Hennessy, Mikey Walsh. Tima had two ways of completing the double, the hard way and the easy way. The hard way being a play-off with The Bun and the easy being yesterdays final league game of the season against Drinagh. Tima only needed a point to claim there second title in 3 years but Ned Long knew playing for a point was a dangerous game. From the kick off Drinagh took control of the game and put it up to Timoleague. Tima finding it hard to settle found there feet after 10 minutes after a couple of scary moments involving the Drinagh attack. Passing the ball around they tried to find a way through the Drinagh defence who were playing like a team challenging for the title themselves. On 25 minutes Walsh was taken down on the edge of the box. Seeing that Tima were under pressure Lyons decided he better put one away for insurance. Bang! Over the wall, hit the net. 1-0 Tima.Within 10 minutes Lyons again found himself in the much the same position. The result was the same with Lyons opting to go to the opposite corner for the sake of vareity. 2-0 Tima at the break.Tima came out in the second half knowing that they were going to have to work hard to f##k this up. Drinagh pushed hard from the off and had Tima under pressure for the opening 10 minutes, but with a world class defence and handy keeper they were up against it. As Drinagh pushed gaps were begining to appear at the back which Hennessy took advantage of 15 minutes into the half rounding the Drinagh centre half and firing home. 3-0Tima. At this point the league was in the bag and Tima turned on the exibition football. The fourth goal saw Denis O' Leary and Lyons playing a one two at the back, Lyons then played Hunt down the line who gave a first time ball to Mikey Walsh. Walsh turned his man inside out and put in an inch perfect cross for Hennessy who crashed it into the back of the net.Tima cruised to victory even though Drinagh got a consilation late on.After the game Sir Ned Long had this to say: 'At the end of the day when all is said and done all credit to the lads its a game of two halfs'Team:Team: Spec Coomey, Ed Lyons, Emmet Harrington, Alan O' Leary, Denis O' Leary, Jonathan Hunt, Ger Collins, Ollie Crowley, Kieran Dineen, Mikey Walsh, Brian Hennessy.
