DRINAGH INTO THE CARLING CUP SEMI-FINAL.

Drinagh had to travel to Skibbereen to play probably the most inform team of the season in the Quarter Final of the Carling Cup, a Cup Competition in which Drinagh have a very good record in. It was Drinagh who broke the deadlock first when Mike Doolan put the lively Keith Jagoe through on goal, Jagoe had a lot still to do as he gathered the ball wide of the box but as the keeper raced off his line, Jagoe sweetly side footed the ball which looped into the back of the net from an acute angle. Skibbereen started to string their passes together but the Drinagh defence was rarely under that much pressure and when they were tested JJ Collins came to the rescue as his awareness saw him race back and clear a sure goal bound effort off the line and away to safety, Skibbereen did manage to pull a goal back when they won a corner and it fell to a player outside the box who hit a curling effort which bounced in front of the keeper and somehow landed in the net. Drinagh’s midfield was working very hard with the O’Regan brothers covering lots of ground and Jagoe giving his usual high energy performance. JJ Collins was having a solid display at left back but it was another JJ that had the Skibbereen defence under pressure when a cross by JJ Hurley hit a Skibb defender and the ball flew between the keeper’s legs but somehow didn’t cross the goal line. Shortly before full time Jagoe won the ball on the wing and spotted the run of Connolly into the box and delivered an inch perfect pass but the ball bounced over Connolly’s foot and away to safety, otherwise it was a certain goal and match winner. The game headed to Extra Time, but it remained 1-1 so it headed to penalty’s, Skibb  scored first ,Goalkeeper Karl McCarthy scored his, then went into goal and saved the next penalty, but with Gavin Daly, Pat-Joe O’Donovan and Donie O’Donovan all converting theirs Drinagh advanced to the next round.

2007 was a huge success for DRINAGH F.C. with the Junior Team winning the Premier League for the Fourth time in Five seasons and Finally winning the Beamish Cup, and the Michael Cronin Memorial Cup, The Ladies won both the League and Cup and the Underage had more success in different age group’s.

DRINAGH BACK TO WINNING WAY’S.

Drinagh got a valuable win today to put them back on track in a very mixed season so far, Darragh Connolly made his first start of the season on his road to recovery from injury, and he was in the thick of it from the start when he shrugged off a challenge in the box and set up his strike partner Mike Doolan who scuffed it wide of the post. Moments later Doolan set up Connolly who again showed good strength to hold off the defender, and his snap shot was well saved by the keeper. Keith Jagoe made a surging run down the wing on the 28th minute and crossed into the box, as it was cleared it fell to the feet of Pat-Joe O’Donovan who flicked it into the path of Rob O’Regan who from 30yards out spotted the keeper off his line and superbly lobbed the ball over him and into the top corner to give Drinagh a 1-0 lead. Pat-Joe O’Donovan and Keith Jagoe both nearly added to the score line shortly before halftime. Crookstown started the second half with some purpose as they rattled the crossbar in the opening few minutes but shortly after they won a penalty and scored from it to put the game at 1-1. It didn’t take Drinagh long to get the wake up call, as O’Donovan gathered a pass from Daniel O’Regan and with a pin point cross into the box, in came the ever lively Keith Jagoe to head Drinagh into the lead,Drinagh were now finding the gaps in midfield and with 3 fresh sub’s on the pitch Crookstown were beginning to get stretched, Two off the sub’s combined when Donie ‘O Donovan ran onto a through ball by Doolan and delightfully crossed to Barry O’Driscoll who powerfully headed past the keeper to give the home team a 3-1 lead,Drinagh got their fourth when Rob O’Regan picked out the unmarked Doolan outside the box and Doolan thumped home the fourth goal of the game as Drinagh gathered a much needed 3points.

Drinagh B team and Drinagh Ladies showed no mercy for Harbour United as between them they scored 26 goals. Up first were the lads playing away to Harbour United here they ran out easy winners with an 11-1 score line the scorer’s were B O’Connell (3),G,O’Donovan (2),Dave Curran (1),James Carroll (1),Kevin O’Neill (1) and playing his last game for the club Eamonn Connolly (3) as he and his MRS (MARIA) are heading off to OZ for the year and every1 at the club wish them a safe and enjoyable year away from the Creamery Village. This result pushed the B’s into 4th in the league table.

Meanwhile the Ladies went four better than the lad’s as they crushed Harbour Ladies 15-1 the net busters were Aishling Connolly (4), Aileen Kearns (3), M Collins (2), Deirdre Doolan (2), Noreen McCarthy (1), Catriona Maloney (1), Laura Alison (1), and Rosarie Collins (1), this result put the Ladies 2nd in their league.

A&B WIN AS LADIES LOSE

Drinagh ladies slumped to a 2-1 defeat away to a impressive Lyre outfit. Drinagh could have had no complaints after full time as Lyre pulled off a fine victory and it could have been much worse for the Champion’s if it wasn’t for the heroics of goalkeeper Mary-Ann Adams as time and time again she pulled off some fine and brave saves to keep her side in the game. Lyre were soon into their stride and it wasn’t long until they were a goal to the good when they worked the ball all the way from the back as the Drinagh marking was non existent to the build up to the goal and Lyre finished their move with a well taken goal. Drinagh knew that they had a game on their hands now, and won a series of corners but the nearest they got to a goal from them was when Ber O’Regan crashed a header back off the crossbar, at the start of the second half Drinagh clicked up a gear and had Lyre on the back foot but time and time again squandered some great scoring chances. Lyre started to get more into the game as time ticked on and Adams was working overtime to keep her team in the game, but Lyre capitalized on some slack marking and doubled their lead. Drinagh tipped off and second half substitute Noreen McCarthy broke down the wing and curled her effort over the keeper and into the net to put the game at 2-1 and give Drinagh a lifeline, but again Drinagh squandered some great chances to pull some sort of a result out of the fire, Lyre held on for a 2-1 victory and a victory they more than deserved, as for Drinagh if they want to retain their title they cant afford to play like they did today.

Drinagh’s A-team headed to Tile King in the first round of the Munster Junior Cup, and again showed that they like this competition very much when they ran out 2-1 winners, it was a hard physical game but goal’s from Eoin O’Donovan and the striker in form at the moment Barry O’Driscoll sealed the victory.

Drinagh B V Baltimore FC

On Sunday, 30th September, Drinagh B met Baltimore FC in Drinagh, for this Division 2 clash.
Drinagh started well, with some great forward play and running from Eamonn Connolly and Darren Beamish, but Drinagh couldn't capitalise on this early pressure. Baltimore kept fighting back and went a goal up just before half time, Drinagh had been caught ball watching, 1-0 to Baltimore at the break.
The second half brought about the introduction of David Curran, who immediately made an impact, Curran has the power and strength that Drinagh badly lacked in the first half. It wasn’t long until he made an impact when after 10 minutes into the second half, Drinagh won a corner, this was cleared but only as far as Curran who cutely laid it into the path of Liam Shiely who crossed from the right to find Eamonn Connolly at the back post, who headed back across goal to make it 1-1.  Young Darren Beamish was having an outstanding game on the wing and was in the thick of all the good forward moves by the home team.
Drinagh's play was growing in confidence, led from the defence by Kevin Curran and Brian McCarthy. Melvin Beamish was brought on with about half an hour to go. Baltimore's chances were limited, but they were awarded a free kick out wide on the right, and made the most of it by scoring their second of the game
Drinagh took the game to Baltimore, and after some good pressure from Leo Collins and Brendan O'Neill, the ball fell to Melvin Beamish about 20 yards from goal, who steadied himself and let fly, an unstoppable shot which carried all the way to the back of the net to put the game at 2-2. Drinagh were now well on top and pushing for the winner.
A quick taken throw from the right, and a neat one two between Liam Shiely and Melvin Beamish, with the later crossing to find Eamon Connolly who again reacted quickest to make the score 3-2 in favour of the home team. The Drinagh Defence shut up shop and kept Baltimore at bay and held on for a hard earned 3-2 victory.

MIXED FORTUNES FOR DRINAGH TEAM’S

Its was a mixed bag for the Drinagh club today, with a win, loss and a draw. The Drinagh ladies seem to be going from strength to strength with yet another impressive victory away to Knockavilla ladies with hot shot striker Ber O’Regan getting a hat trick, new addition’s to the squad this season Aileen Kearns and Laura Alison got 1 each, with Aisling Connolly firing home a penalty to give the ladies a 6-1 victory, and the ladies would like to thank everyone who supported their very successful table quiz the previous Friday night.

Drinagh B’s playing at home played out a 0-0 draw to a spirited coutmacsherry team, and the Drinagh Junior team playing after produced their best performance of the season by far, but still couldn’t grind out a victory against an Avondale team who came to Drinagh full of confidence. It wasn’t long before the home team had knocked the wind out of their sail’s when Keith Jagoe controlled a Mike Doolan cross, turned his marker and fired past the keeper for a 1-0 lead. Drinagh double their score ten minutes later when Jagoe again latched onto a superb ball from John O’Driscoll, and flicked it past the advancing keeper to put Drinagh into a commanding 2-0 lead. Avondale had no answer to the young Drinagh midfielder as he had a storming game in centre midfield, shortly before half time Drinagh were dealt a massive blow when Keeper James O’Regan was injured and replaced by Alan Shorten. A hard thing for a sub keeper to do is to come on during a game and be ready for the challenge but Shorten pulled off 3 top class saves to keep the score at 2-0 even the opposition applauded his saves.

Gavin Daly was a towering force at the back but nothing could be done to prevent Avondale’s fight back as they managed to get 2 late goals before full time and force extra time. Barry O’Driscoll was brought on up front and made a immediate impact when a pinpoint Rob O’Regan pass set him clear on goal and he calmly slotted it into the bottom corner to give Drinagh a 3-2 lead, O’Driscoll certainly is one for the future with his pace and deadly eye for goal. The dreaded Drinagh curse struck again when they failed to hold onto a lead and somehow went from 3-2 up to 4-3 down minutes before the end of extra time, but all was not lost as Rob O’Regan was fouled 30yards out from goal, O’Regan decided to take the free kick himself and boy oh boy did he deliver the good’s, as he fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net a deadly strike from a very solid player.

The game headed to penalties but Drinagh couldn’t pull anymore tricks out of the hat as Avondale ran out winners from the penalty spot.

DRINAGH RESUME IN STYLE
After last year’s amazing campaign, Drinagh played Premier League Runners-Up Skibbereen for the Michael Cronin Cup, which was played in Bantry Gunners pitch. Drinagh were far from full strength but new stand in keeper Karl McCarthy had a very solid game between the sticks as he pulled off some fine saves, but there was little he could do to prevent Skibbereen taking an early lead, but by the quarter hour mark Drinagh were back in the game when Rob O’Regan made one of his trademark run’s from midfield and drilled a low effort towards goal, and the keeper could only parry the goal bound shot into the path of Gavin Beamish who tapped into the net.
Eamonn Connolly put Drinagh 2-1 ahead on the 20th minute when he powerfully curled home a stunning free kick from 25yards, but Connolly’s and Drinagh’s joy was short lived as within a minute Skibbereen were awarded a penalty which they scored. This put the game at 2-2. Both teams had their chances before half-time but none came closer than Keith Jacoe’s delicate lob which had the keeper well beaten but came crashing back off the upright. The second half was a ding dong battle which saw both teams having decent possession and some near chances but no goals which put the game into extra time. During the break Drinagh introduced some young fresh talent and this helped Drinagh to get the upper hand in the game, but it was one of the old boy’s who struck first as Rob O’Regan latched onto a cleared corner and first time looped his effort over the defence and into the bottom corner, this gave Drinagh more confidence in the closing stages and it showed again as sub Barry O’Driscoll picked up the ball on the wing and had plenty time to race towards goal and slot home Drinagh’s fourth, to give Drinagh a 4-2 victory and to add the Michael Cronin Cup, to the Trophy Cabinet alongside the Premier League Title and the Beamish Cup.
