Coaching the coaches:

Julia Walsh, Director of Sports Studies and Physical Education at UCC is to begin a series of lectures aimed at coaches of all levels, across all sporting codes with the goal of improving coaching structures within clubs across Cork city and county starting next week.

The event, which is the first in a series of talks that will involve students from UCC’s sports studies department and inter-action from the audience is set to attract a huge crowd to the Rochestown Park Hotel on Monday next, March 15th at 7.30pm.

Called Coaching the Coaches, the information sessions, brought to you by UCC, in association with the Evening Echo and the Rochestown Park Hotel is aimed at coaches and administrators of all levels across all sporting codes who have a desire to improve the coaching structures at their clubs.

The presentation by Julia Walsh, who
is recognised by her peers as one of the leading teacher of coaches in Ireland is
called 'The Novice Coach, learning from expert novice coaches', is aimed
at novice coaches working with children and club administrators working
with novice coaches.

The forum, which includes a presentation by Julia Walsh contains information that will help novice coaches at the start of their coaching journey and introduce them to new ideas and thinking.

Students from UCC involved in the coaching stream share their experience and hints on coaching children in a round-table discussion.

This session is free and open to all novice coaches (or people mentoring novice coaches) across all sporting codes.

There will be opportunity for interaction and questions on the night.

All are welcome and as demand is expected to exceed places available those interested can reserve their place at the event by e-mailing esport@eecho.ie and confirming their attendance.

The second presentation night in this coaching series will take place on Thursday April 22nd in the Rochestown Park Hotel.

Footnote:

Julia Walsh has spent most of her life being a coach and studying coaches. In her current role she is the Director of Sports Studies and Physical Education at UCC where she works with future teachers, coaches, and health professionals.

Her area of interest is how coaches develop over the course of their career, and how best to support them, particularly in the early years of coaching.

One of her current projects is mentoring novice coaches working with children (and much more) at Lakewood Soccer Club. She is also part of a academic team (DCU and UL) who investigated the sport volunteer sector for the Irish Sports Council.
