DUNMANWAY TOWN GIFTED TOP SPOT BY ARDFIELD ERRORS2

The failure to try play the ball out of the danger zone rather than clear it first time - not once but on two ocassions - cost Ardfield dearly at Dunmanway Town last Sunday, losing 3-2 despite having more of the play, particularly in the more of the chances but neither counting when it came to putting the ball in the net.

Honours were all but even up until about midway through the first half when the visitors went a goal down through a disputed 'handball' goal.

Despite having more of the ball up till then and after that, Ardfield were caught in possession out on the left from which Dunmanway got their second.

Within almost a minute Ardfield found themselves back in the game courtesy of an own goal but were still finding difficulty putting the ball in the Dunmanway goal on their own steam, though they had had several chances to do so up to the break.

Ardfield continued to lay seize on the Dunmanway side but another fatal error at the back, when the ball should have been way up the field or at least out to the sideline, the hosts struck for the third time.

Almost all of the remaining play was in the Dunmanway half and goal area, a resasonable claim for a penalty and later Kieran O'Donovan coming closest with a spectacular overhead kick.

Ardfield did manage to score near the end when Micheál O'Mahony powered one from outside the area through a body of players, but not before Ardfield goalkeeper Diarmuid O'Donovan was called on to make a superb point blank save at the other end.

The introduction of Conor Hegarty for O’Sullivan due to injury was a clear indication by manager John Miles that he was satisfied the third goal would come and indeed Ardfield intensified their pressure on Dunmanway, but the final whistle came before any equaliser did and the visitors were left to rue their missed chances and the two mistakes at the back that effectively handed Dunmanway the three points and the chance to go top of the Beamish-sponsored West Cork Premier League.

ARDFIELD ASSEND TO DIZZY HEIGHTS FOR A FEW HOURS1

Ardfield spent a little over five hours as West Cork League Beamish-sponsored Premier Division leaders last Sunday following the no-show of Crossmahon at Carrigroe last Sunday.

In what can only be described as extremely poor conditions for football about half of a dozen of the opposition showed to play leaving referee McDermott with no option but to award the home side the three points.

The other Premier games saw 3-2 away wins for both Drinagh and Dunmanway Town over Leeside and Skibbereen respectively, leaving Drinagh on top of the table if only by goal difference, though that does not count at the end of the season in the event of a tie on points, when a play-off would be arranged, though that is a long way away.

Tomorrow Ardfield could again go top if they win at Dunmanway for Drinagh are not scheduled to play.

In other games tomorrow Bantry play Aultagh, Leeside entertain Crossmahon and Ballydehob make the short trip to Skibbereen.

NO GOALS BUT PLENTY TO BE PLEASED ABOUT0

Ardfield made the short visit to Clonakilty Town in their second game of the season of the West Cork Premier League, the opposition looking for their first points of the 2008/2009 campaign.

With a fine win over Bantry Gunners already under their belt Ardfield were hoping to make it two-for-two but had to settle for a 0-0 draw, which was probably a fair result on the balance of play.

It was the home side that made all the initial moves and the match swung in ten/fifteen minute blocks of play from one side to the other throughout the rest of the game, with Ardfield probably edging it in terms of goal-scoring chances.

Manager John Miles had little options on the sideline that would enable him change his play programme, mainly because of players on end of summer holiday breaks, but the late make-shift changes worked well as Ardfield did not sit back and play for the away draw, but rather, at times, very forcibly took the game to Clon.

Team:Diarmuid O’Donovan, Seamus McCarthy, Jonathan O’Donovan, Trevor Draper, Mark Skelly, Micheál O’Mahony, Mark Ronoan, Micheál McCarthy, Paul O’Sullivan, Conor Uhl, Diarmuid Keohane
Subs: John Walshe, Donnacha McCarthy

BANTRY GUNNED DOWN IN FINE STYLE BY ARDFIELD5

Ardfield made their own bit of history last Saturday evening winning their first-ever West Cork Premier League game 3-1 against visiting Bantry Gunners at Carrigroe, Rathbarry.

Goals by Mark Ronan (2) and Paul O’Sullivan sealed the win in a game that saw the home side play some attractive football, introduce new signing Trevor Draper formerly of Lyre Rovers and be marshaled throughout by team captain and Man of the Match Jonathan O’Donovan.

Though there was a period in the second half where Bantry got much more possession of the ball than the hosts, Ardfield were clearly the better of the two sides and it was a beautifully placed strike by Ronan into the Bantry net that set things in motion.

The one blip in the Ardfield game plan could not have been forseen when Jonathan O’Donovan was deemed to have fouled the Bantry forward some twenty yards from the Ardfield goal. Despite being against the run of play; despite the wall of Ardfield players and despite well positioning of keeper Finbarr McCarthy, nothing could stop the ensuing equalizer., top drawer stuff.

The aforementioned O’Donovan foul aside, referee McDermott had a good game and midway through the first half played advantage on a foul to Kevin O’Brien from which Ardfield’s Diarmuid Super Keohane had his legs taken from under in the area and Mark Ronan stepped up to calmly claim his second of the day.

With just seven minutes remaining on the clock, after good work by Micheál Haulie McCarthy, Paul O’Sullivan skipped around the defence to slot home Ardfield’s third and seal the win which leaves Ardfield in second place in the league on goal difference behind Dunmanway Town (5-3 winners over Crossmahon), and ahead of Ballydehob (5-4 winners at Aultagh) and Leeside (1-0 winners at home to Clonakilty). Skibbereen and Drinagh played out a 2-2 draw in the other first-day match.

The winning ways continued on Wednesday last with a friendly game to visiting Dunmanway Town B of the 2nd Division and though Ardfield enjoyed the majority of the ball, chances and goals, the visitors had a good spell early in the second half and managed to pull a goal back.

But Ardfield were always in control of this game and a goal midway through the first half by Diarmuid Super Keohane gave the hosts the lead into the half time break, with a further two goals from Conor Uhl in the seond half.

Team v Bantry: Finbarr McCarthy, Trevor Draper, Seamus McCarthy, Kevin O’Brien, John Walshe, Jonathan O’Donovan, Mark Ronan, Micheál McCarthy, Diarmuid Keohane, Mark Evans, Paul O’Sullivan Subs: Alan Tobin, Conor Hegarty

DISAPPOINTING EXIT IN CARLING CUP AS LEAGUE SEASON LOOMS3

Ardfield Juniors unfortunately made an early exit from the Carling Cup last Sunday morning going down 2-0 to Droumree Dynamos in Droumree, Macroom.

Goals in each half of the match, the first from a penalty conceded much too early in the game and the second from a free kick in the last fifteen, mean that Club Manager John Miles must now focus the panel on their new-found Premier League football status and the August 31st visit of Bantry Gunners, the first match of the 2008/2009 campaign.
